Poquoson Club

by Brian Wilson

(Above) On Friday December 11th, The Kiwanis Club of Poquoson performed the annual ritual of lighting the "Official City Christmas Tree".
After Kiwanis Club President, Walt Burns welcomed the large crowd, the Poquoson Middle School Chorus entertained everyone with carols. The City Mayor, Gordon Helsel, assisted by a dozen children "Threw the Switch" that illuminated the massive tree. Suddenly, the wailing of sirens announced the arrival of Santa Claus mounted on a big, red fire truck and accompanied by four elves from the Builders Club. Santa and his elves gave candy to the children and a great time was had by all.

(Above) On December 9th the Kiwanis Club of Poquoson inducted 24 new members into the Poquoson Middle School Builders Club. The Club has been in existence since 2000 and now has over sixty members. Pictures shows Kiwanis President Walt Burns, accompanied by Builders Club Officers, addressing teachers and parents at the ceremony. The festivities were finished off with cake and ice cream in the school cafeteria.

(Above) During the week of December 7th thru 11th, the Kiwanis Club of Poquoson teamed with the Poquoson High School Key Club to Man the Red Kettles and Ring the Bells for the Salvation Army, in front of two local food stores. While the "OLD " Kiwanians mostly watched, the young Key Clubbers danced and sang Christmas Carols to entertain the shoppers -- also to keep warm. Overall, the Poquoson Kiwanis Club and its sponsored Key Club donated well over 200 man hours to help the Salvation Army in its humanitarian endeavors
