I am the American Flag

The below was submitted by Hal Jewel. His friend and author of the poem, Chris Brewer, is President of his club, Northwest Washington DC.

I am the American Flag
by
Christopher H. Brewer

I am the American Flag.
I was born in the hearts of brave men and women, patriots all.
I have been sewn from fine silk dresses and the best linen curtains.
I have been made out of the most meager of items by Prisoners of War.
I have provided hope for centuries when those oppressed see me
born by soldiers as they bring blessed relief.
I come in gigantic sizes on great flagpoles over our Nations
most sacred grounds.
I come in tiny lapel pins on young children as they sing patriotic songs in small towns everywhere, but no matter my size I always stand for the same principles.
I fly in silent honor and in loud rejoicing.
I celebrate life and honor death.
I am the American Flag and when I fly Freedom breathes.
