Kiwanis Club of Northwest Washington D.C.

by Hal Jewel, Secretary N.W. K.

Northwest is at it again! November brought us a new member and three investigators. We helped with the Miss Wheelchair DC Pageant with money and time. It was a great Event I am sure you heard all about it on WTOP with Bob Mattingly. We got our gifts off to International and to the Capital District Foundations. We enrolled Chris Brewer in the Tablet of Honor group for the Capital District Foundation. Chris is our past and our current President. We interclubed with Mitchellville for the Governors visit and sponsored two Circle K youth so they could also attend that dinner. Last but not least we purchased 140, 12-13 pound turkeys and distributed them to needy families. This is a tough job as you must first wrestle with a store ( this time the Giant) to be able to buy that many of their turkeys. Then you must beg them to give you a discount so you can get more turkeys with the money budgeted. Then you have to get enough members with their cars to get up early to be at the store when it opens. Lastly you have to get the turkeys to their proper location. With our aging group and many infirmities it writes much easier than it walks. I congratulate those that got up before breakfast (5:00AM for me) in order to get Thanksgiving turkeys for some less fortunate neighbors.

Potomac Region

Kids Against Hunger is off to a rocky start with very few volunteers coming forth. We are hoping to get a committee formed in December with the major fund raising to be done in January and February. We will need about 200 or 300 volunteers to help with packaging of the food, about 4 hours each. Key Clubs, Circle K Clubs and all able bodied workers can help. By the way this meets the Virginia and Maryland Community Service requirement for graduation. I have a 14 minute video DVD that explains the whole program. I and the Potomac Region Trustee, Doris Montgomery, would love to bring it to your Club. Just call me 240-497-0060 or 240-417-6605 if you leave a message and do not hear back from me right away call me again. The packaging event will be in March. There will be an opportunity to help another group that will be packaging in December or January. That group will be headed by Mr. Romi Bhatia he can be reached romi_bhatia@yahoo.com for more information about where and when they will be doing the packing. You can get more information about Kids Against Hunger at their website www.kidsagainsthunger.org . Starvation can be corrected the lives of the children can be saved, but we must do our part to cure the hunger here and abroad. Praise God ! Amen.
