Woodbridge Club Charters New Circle K Club

by Al Knehans

At a lively ceremony on May 10, 2009, at the Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC), Woodbridge Campus; the Woodbridge Kiwanis Club officially presented a Kiwanis International Circle K Charter to their newest Sponsored Youth Club.

The genesis of the new Club began late last school year, when a member of the Hylton Key Club asked if there was a Circle K Club at the Woodbridge Campus. Good question. The answer was NO. So the Club decided to develop one. They were informed by a guest Kiwanian at one of their meetings, that it was difficult to develop a club at a community college, as the students usually went home after their classes. They pleasantly found out that the development of the club depends on the attitude and enthusiasm of the people wanting to develop the club.

At the first meeting at the college, they met Matt "Tank" McCarl, a member of the NVCC faculty. Tank had been a past Treasurer of a Circle K Club at a small college in North Carolina. He was very interested in establishing a club at the Woodbridge Campus. Some time later, Tank stated that Arthur Tomayo, a student at the college, had agreed to help develop the club. Some time later, Arthur, the newly elected Club president, invited our Club to attend their first meeting. It was like attending a Key Club meeting, in that the club officers and every member displayed a lot of enthusiasm, initiative, and can-do attitude about developing the new Club. They had already developed and scheduled their first fundraiser. At the chartering ceremony, we found out that they were having another fundraiser the next Saturday evening. Our Club sends sincere appreciation to Arthur Tomayo, whose inspired leadership, was basically responsible for developing this great "can do" club in such a short timeframe. The Club's new Faculty Advisor is Holly Easterling.

The Woodbridge Club welcomes the NVCC Circle K Club into their ever growing family of Sponsored Youth Clubs and wishes them continued success in the following years. WELCOME ABOARD!!!
