K-Kids at Crofton Woods Elementary School in Crofton Maryland

We are in our 6th year and are going strong! Our club is made up of 4th and 5th grade students and we have had as many as 43 kids in our club at a time. This year we are a little down in numbers and I believe the count is 29.

For our fall/winter projects the club decided to raise money for Sarah's House, which is a local homeless and abused women's shelter that houses about 50 +/- women and children. Of course that entailed making flyers, posters, announcing over the loud speaker and finding enough people to make it worthwhile. It was decided that a donation jar would be the best way to sell the baked items instead of pricing each "cookie". I went to help with the sale and could not believe how much was donated, and how generous the "Concert Attendees" were!

The club held a bake sale at the Winter Concert and collected new clothing items for Sarah's House. They raised $350 and collected 5 large boxes of clothing which was delivered before Christmas.

For the spring project they have decided to place large (plastic water bottle) jars in each class grade area, to hold a "Penny War". The class with the most pennies will win a movie and popcorn party. Any silver change will be deducted from the penny jar and held separately therefore the "war" comes into play. The K-kids are very excited and are making posters and flyers to get things going within the next week. It will run until May and I'm sure will give them a good donation to go to the SPCA, which will be the recipient.

The K-Kid clubs are a great way to start our youth on the path to helping others and a great way to begin a "Kiwanis" path to leadership in their schools and communities!
