Charlottesville Holiday 5K Helps Kids Health Camp

by Jim Hart

The 26th annual Kiwanis Independence Day 5K race took place on the most salubrious July 4th morning in recent memory. Nearly 340 runners, ranging in age from 5 to 83, spread out over the gently rolling hills of the lovely Forest Lakes North subdivision in Charlottesville. Alec Lorenzoni finished first with a time of 15:51. The top female finisher was Lauretta Dezubay at 17:38. The big winner was Camp Holiday Trails, a marvelous summer camp for children with special health needs. Led by major sponsor, Better Living Inc,. dozens of local businesses made contributions that resulted in proceeds of more than $7,000 going to the camp. The Charlottesville Track Club once again provided special guidance to the Charlottesville Kiwanians who have produced a very well-organized race that has become an annual summer holiday tradition for many families representing, amazingly, three generations. Pictured are (from left) Kiwanis Club President Norm Gutzler, Camp Holiday Trails Board member Susan Smith, and Kiwanis Race Director Bill Hall.
