Kiwanis Club of Smithfield Helps Area Youth With Higher Education Affordability
by Karen Foster

For years, the Kiwanis Club of Smithfield has presented a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving student from each of Isle of Wight county's two high schools, Smithfield High and Windsor High. Now, the club has found another way to help students achieve their post-secondary educational goals.

The newly formed Higher Education Program started with a simple idea, presented by Barbara Bryant, club Treasurer, to target a segment of our youth that falls between the cracks of higher education affordability. Applicants must be graduating seniors who have completed the Isle of Wight County School System Career and Technical Education Program and will attend a technical school or community college within fifty miles of the county. The scholarship maximum of $5,000 paid over two years, is intended to cover all expenses associated with the recipient completing the program of his or her choice.

The selection of the scholarship winner will be based primarily on academic achievement and financial need. Character, leadership, service to others, and suitability for higher education will also be considered. Smithfield Kiwanians are very proud of their continued support of the youth of our community with this new addition to the Howard Haverty Memorial Scholarship Fund. Committee Members are Barbara Bryant, Scholarship Committee Chairman, Renee Bevan, Mary Frances Briley, Connie Chapman, Lou Codega, Mac Cofer, Bill Lane, Ed Mortimer, Alan Nogiec, Carter Williams, Wayne Willis. Contact Barbara Bryant via email at RescueBarbara@Charter.net for additional information on this important project.
