The Kiwanis Club of Woodbridge, VA assists ACTS in moving their "Operation Turkey" activities

During most of January, 2009, the Woodbridge Club has been assisting ACTS (Action in the Community Through Service) Food Pantry, located in Dumfries, VA, in moving their "Operation Turkey" activities from a building located in Woodbridge, VA, to a temporary facility; until a new permanent location can be obtained. ACTS must vacate their present facility by the end of January. The Woodbridge Club volunteered to develop part of Mr. Howell Barnes old barn into a temporary storage facility for the nonfood items associated with the "Operation Turkey" function. Mr. Barnes is a charter member of the Club. Considerable effort and some expense was expended by the Club to turn parts of the barn into an acceptable and varmint proof facility. On January 29, members of the Club, assisted by several other volunteers, moved empty storage boxes, tables, chairs, and other items to the renovated facility. Hopefully, that in the near future, the Club will be asked to move the items to a permanent facility for "Operation Turkey".

The Kiwanis Club of Woodbridge, VA, honors John Wiley, on his 80th birthday

At its meeting on January 22, 2009, members of the Woodbridge Club honored John Wiley, a long time member of the club, with a surprise party to celebrate his 80th birthday. John joined the Club in 1983 and served as Club President during 1986-87. He has received a Hixon Award and a Distinguished Service Award. He is very active in the spiritual and other aspects of the Club. John spent his early years as an orphan at The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, located at Oxford, North Carolina. He is very dedicated to the orphanage, makes very frequent trips there, usually bearing gifts, including Christmas toys and boxes of peanuts that the Club has left over from its peanut sales. At his birthday party, each Club member presented John with a check, made payable to the orphanage. He was pleasantly surprised and thanked everyone for their generous donation.
