Kiwanis Family Food Drive

by Rosemary Cummings

The blustery, cold weather did not deter the Coastal Delaware Kiwanis Club from their mission north of the Bridge, the Indian River Bridge that is. The Kiwanis Club schedules a food drive in the coastal area each month, after hearing about the needs in the communities they serve. Previous food drives were held 8 AM until Noon. In January, because of the cold, they tried something different at the two stores where they collect groceries. After their recent Board meeting, they decided to request a time change with the store managers to collect from 10 AM until 2 PM. Wow, what a difference an hour or two makes. In past collections, members filled 8-10 carts or the back of one van. This time, more Kiwanis family members were there at the new time and more customers were as well. K-Kids and Builders Club members handed out fliers, as did Kiwanians and Key Club members then the K-Kids packed the groceries in the vans, and when the drive ended, the Kiwanians drove to the Cape Henlopen Food Basket to deliver their treasure of the day. K-Kids experienced a wonderful sense of community giving whether the customer gave a can of tomatoes or a jar of peanut butter and they were in awe when some neighbors deposited several bags filled with items from the list in the carts. The final result, two large vans packed to the brim with groceries, $65.50 in cash and a $25 dollar gift card. And even more important, several prospective Kiwanians and K-Kids to join in service the next timeā€¦
