Kiwanis Club of Poquoson

by Joe Discenza

Kiwanis Club of Poquoson President Philip E. Prisco presented Poquoson Library Director Ms. Elisabeth Tai with a check for $700 to support this year's Winter Read Program and for the Babygarten/Early Literacy Center. The library began Babygarten, a program for children 2-24 months old and caregivers to promote early literacy, in 2005 with a $1,300 grant from the Poquoson Kiwanis for startup materials.

Ms. Tai says, "Research has shown that early literacy is very important for young children's development and this program promotes that by showing caregivers how most effectively to use reading, rhymes, and other activities to help young children's brains develop in a way that will later support literacy."

The Kiwanis Club of Poquoson has committed to partner with the library to sustain this important program, under Kiwanis International service program, "Young Children: Priority One."

The Kiwanis Club of Poquoson sets flags along Wythe Creek Road, Victory Boulevard, and City Hall Avenue in Poquoson for Martin Luther King Day. The club sets out flags for major U.S. holidays.

Chip Petre, Kiwanis Flags Chairman, sets a flag on Wythe Creek Road befre sunrise.

Bob and Jim Christol set the final flag as the granddaughter of club president Philip E. Prisco looks on.
