Staunton Club Holds Pancake Breakfast
by Lucinda Cooke

The Staunton Kiwanis Club held its "Second Greatest Pancake Breakfast Ever" this fall to benefit local charitable and educational organizations. The breakfast took place at Robert E. Lee High School and was well staffed by Staunton club members, as well as by members of the school's Key Club and Mary Baldwin College's CKI. Hundreds of hungry patrons arrived as early as 7:00 a.m. to enjoy a hearty breakfast of pancakes, sausages, juice and coffee. The lead sponsor for the breakfast was Kroger's who provided nearly all the supplies needed for the fundraiser. This year the monies raised went to support the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank's "Backpack Program," which provides local elementary schools with backpacks filled with nutritious food to supplement needy students on weekends. The other beneficiary was the Lee High School's chorus. This musical program was revived only a few years ago, but operated on a shoestring. Students and faculty raised most of their own money to keep the program alive. It has since more than doubled in size and the chorus has performed across the state. Recently, at a Staunton Kiwanis Club meeting, representatives from Kroger's, the Food Bank, and the Lee High School chorus faculty member, Pam Sproul, were recognized and checks presented from the proceeds of the pancake breakfast.
