Rehoboth Elementary School K-Kids Get Ready for Spring

by Rosemary Cummings

At the beginning of the school year, the Rehoboth ES Principal Mrs. Mumford gave the two Coastal DE Kiwanis Advisors a new project for the RES K-Kids. They could plant a garden at the bus stop so flowers would greet the students in Spring when they arrived each morning. The bulbs were ordered and after a long wait they finally arrived. Luckily, the December weather held out and one beautiful December Saturday afternoon the K-Kids planted Spring bulbs at a sunny spot where the bus drops off and picks up students. First, they raked the area clean, then laid out a tarp on the sidewalk for the mulch they would remove, then working in teams they dug holes according to size for the 50 Anemone Bulbs, 50 Grape Hyacinth Bulbs, 25 large Daffodil Bulbs, and 50 purple and white Crocus. Part of the fun during the work was the discovery of a "buried treasure" - a large rectangle of concrete or metal with holes. After careful examination and no clear answer, they decided to show the maintenance staff the next school day. Continuing, the K-Kids then placed each bulb in a hole with one team member planting and the other covering with dirt. After they finished planting, they replaced the mulch and cleaned up the area, and enjoyed the tailgate party of cookies and lemonade their Kiwanis Advisor had ready for them when they finished for the day. Now, the K-Kids are on alert, as they wait until March or the first days of Spring, whichever comes first, to see the results of their work as the bulbs start to sprout leaves and flower. Stay tuned.
