Kiwanis Club of Ocean Pines - Ocean City

WORCESTER COUNTY GOLD VISITS KIWANIS

There's an organization in Worcester County that does so much to assist those in need of support, it's known as Worcester County GOLD, an acronym for Giving Other Lives Dignity. Pictured above (L to R) are Rick Krall, a volunteer and member of the GOLD Board, Kiwanis President-Elect Roy Foreman, and Margaret Yates who is President of the GOLD Board after they spoke to Kiwanis at the Ocean Pines Community Center on September 22nd about what GOLD does.

GOLD is located in Snow Hill, Maryland in the same building where Worcester County Department of Social Services is located and has only one paid employee, Director Debbie Cole, and totally depends on the assistance of volunteers to get the job done.

GOLD works directly with Social Services to determine who should be recipients of assistance in their time of crisis. It could be for help from their Baby Pantry to which the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City donates from weekly collections made at the club's meetings; the Adult Basic Care Pantry which supports among other things, the homeless of the county; the Principal's Fund which aids students in need as determined by county school principals; Maryland Access Point which works with senior citizens; Camp Scholarships Fund which helps to send deserving children to summer camp; the Foster Care Fund helping with children in foster care; and the Rainbow Fund which is a general fund. All the funding for GOLD comes from three sources: Donations, GOLD fundraisers, and Grants. Aid is closely screened so that people in need are determined to be legitimate. Many organizations in the county work closely to make sure that there are no fraudulent recipients.

KIWANIS DUCK RACE FUNDRAISER IS A WIN FOR ALL

Ever see a duck race? Kiwanis holds one annually in early September at Frontier Town to raise funds for their Scholarship Fund which awards scholarships to local high school senior students. Pictured above are the over 1000 ducks being released from the starting gate. Cub Scouts from Pack 480, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City, were also at the race helping in the pool to get the ducks in position and getting the chance to sell some of their Popcorn for their own fundraiser. Their Popcorn sale goes on through October 2010. Check the Cub Scouts website at www.oceanpines480.mypack.us for more information or stop by the Shore Stop on Rt. 589 where they sell their popcorn. Pictured (DSC04856) are some of the Cubs at their stand before the race.

(L to R) Cub master Joe Coleman, Cubs Matt Coleman, Nick Coleman, Camden Eberly, and Jonathan Pinkham.

Local businesses donated prizes which were awarded in addition to the four Cash Prizes of $1500, $300, $150 and $50. The big winners were Roger Peek, Barbara Beard, Jake Baber, and Betty Burton. ALSO, a big THANK YOU to Outback Steakhouse, Cheers in Berlin, Whiskers in Pines Plaza, The Beach Club, Deer Run Golf, Ocean Pines Golf Club, Bay Club Golf, Barrett Motors in Berlin, Sherwood of Salisbury, Adkins Hardware, Salon 6, Sunset Grille, Bank of Ocean City, PNC Bank, Farmers Bank of Willards, Marina Deck and Ho Feng Garden Restaurant both of Pennington Commons, as well as donations from Mike Foelber of Rutherford Realty and Oleg Dudkin of Kiwanis.

This year will be the 21st year for the Chesapeake Celtic Festival to be held on October 2nd and 3rd at Furnace Town, Maryland off Route 12 on Old Furnace Town Road just five miles north of Snow Hill/MD. Festival organizer, Jeanne du Nord and her husband, David Buser, attended the weekly Kiwanis meeting on September 14th at Hall's in Ocean City as the guest speakers and let the club know all about their event. Pictured above are (L to R) Kiwanis President-Elect, Roy Foreman, Jeanne Du Nord, and Kiwanis Speakers and Program Chair, Jack "Graham" Caldwell dressed in his Celtic garb, as is Jeanne. KIWANIS LEARNS ABOUT WORCESTER COUNTY LIBRARY PROGRAMS

The guest speaker for the September 8th weekly meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City was Lisa Stant, Programs and Public Relations Director for the Adult Programs of the Worcester County Library. Pictured above (L to R) Kiwanis President-Elect, Roy Foreman is thanking Lisa for speaking to the club while Kiwanis Programs Chair, Jack "Graham" Caldwell, looks on.

There are so many great programs available through the Worcester County Library, as Kiwanians learned. Trips, plays, and a myriad of classes of all different types are available. It's well worth the time to check out their website for more details at www.worcesterlibrary.org or contact Lisa Stant at 410-632-3970 to take advantage of this wonderful community asset.

KIWANIS DONATES TO INTERFAITH CAREGIVERS

There's a service provided in Worcester County known as Interfaith Caregivers which assists those in need of transportation for medical services. Reverend David Herr is the contact. He is also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City and chaplain for the club. Above, Reverend Herr, left, is shown accepting a $500 donation from Kiwanis President, Dan Peletier, on the right. While the mission of Kiwanis is "Serving the Children of the World" it also is a community service organization supporting many other valuable programs of which Interfaith Caregivers is one.
