Snapshots from Around the District

Dan Wooley (pictured left) of BCP Smyrna accepts 238 handwritten notecards from Dover Kiwanis Club service projects coordinator Dottie Brown as part of the recent "Letters for Lyrics" national campaign sponsored by RAM Trucks to collect heartwarming notecards for troops serving overseas. Kiwanis Club members penned 135 of the cards, 9 were written by members of the Milford KSI Aktion Club, and 94 were written by residents of Heritage at Dover.  The notecards will be sent to troops overseas and featured comments expressing appreciation to soldiers for serving their country, descriptions of the Dover/Kent County community, poems, and humeorus anecdotes. Kiwanis is an international service club composed of men and women of all ages committed to improving the lives of children in the local community and worldwide.  For membership information contact Joyce Thompson at 678-2753.

Kiwanis Club of Parkville donated "Back to School" supplies to needy children in the Edgewood area. Items included back packs, crayons, glue sticks, pencils, spiral note books, composition note books, scissors etc.. The "Back to School Bash" was sponsored by The Extreme Family Outreach Ministries and was held at the Outreach Center  in Edgewood in Harford County which is in the 12th Division..  Most of these children are from a single parent home, where providing for their basic needs can be a challenge. Over 300 children from Pre K to High School were given a bag full of school supplies appropriate for their grade level.  It was also a fun time with Mr. Steve, the Extreme Balloon man, eating hot dogs and jumping in the moon bounce.

The Rehoboth Beach Kiwanis Club was privileged to have Joan Deaver, Sussex County Council person as a luncheon speaker.   In 2008 Joan was the first woman to be elected to the Council and of the five members (three West & two East) is the only Democrat.  Although Joan is the third district (Lewes and North) representative she has the whole of Sussex County interests at heart.  Through the CBS (Center for Better Sussex) Joan was instrumental in pushing for the offshore wind power program.  Some interesting facts we learned: No property tax increases planned at this time, a private company runs the County, There is no paid Executive Administrator, and there is no land use planner on the board.  Joan feels strongly that the county should not approve additional sub-divisions in light of the fact that the state will not build additional roads or schools.  She also pointed out that all the current schools, except the new high school, are at or near capacity.   The answer to the final question---- Joan will be running for re-election to another term!

Members of the Tabb Kiwanis Club collected the back to school supplies and donated to Tabb Elementary School on August 18 to ensure all students have what they need for a good start. This is one of the many community projects we took. We meet on 1st and 3rd. Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm in Andrea's Italian Restaurant. New members are welcome. For more information call 898-3246. Thanks. Elizabeth Tai, TKC Public Relations.
