by David Landis

Commissioner Jim Bunting Speaks to Kiwani
s. County Commissioner Jim Bunting was the guest speaker at the September 28th weekly meeting of the Kiwanis Club in the Ocean Pines Community Center. A group of very interested members heard his message about the Worcester County economic growth and the balancing of the county's budget. Both are of high priority to his constituents, among which were many Kiwanians who also serve the community. Pictured (L to R) are Graham Caldwell, Speakers Chair for Kiwanis , Roy Foreman, President of Kiwanis, and Commissioner Jim Bunting.

Kiwanis Donates to Buckingham Elementary
. The purpose of Kiwanis is "Serving the Children of the World" which ties in directly with supporting the schools in the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City area. Pictured is Kiwanis President Roy Foreman presenting a $1000 check to Roger Pacella, Principal of Buckingham Elementary School in Berlin, Maryland. for use with their school programs. Buckingham Elementary also has a K-Kids Club which is the Kiwanis Club at the elementary school level where the students learn to do service to their community.

September Brings Two Big Kiwanis Fundraisers to End
. September 2011 was a great month for the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City because that's when the Boardwalk Car Raffle, which started in May with Springfest, came to fruition at Sunfest when the winning ticket was drawn. Pictured is Kiwanis Car Raffle Chairman Charlie Warner standing to the left of Ocean City Mayor, Rick Meehan (center), as the mayor draws the winning ticket for the 2012 red Mustang convertible. Additionally, on September 10th, the annual Duck Race was held at Frontier Town with the top 3 winners taking away cash prizes of $1000, $300, and $200. Pictured are Kiwanis members, Jim Spicknall on the left and Graham Caldwell on the right as they prepare the ducks to race. All the proceeds of the events go to the Kiwanis Foundation which funds scholarships annually for local high school senior students. But alas it's October, so it's time for another smaller fundraiser, the annual Fall Pancake Breakfast on October 8th from 7 to 11 AM at the Ocean Pines Community Center to raise more funds for scholarships.

Kiwanis Donates to Berlin Intermediate School. The purpose of Kiwanis is "Serving the Children of the World" which is why the local club donates to local schools. Pictured are Kiwanian Jane Slotter, the club's representative to B.I.S., receiving a $1000 donation from Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City President-elect Mike Morton to be used for Berlin Intermediate School programs. In addition to B.I.S., the local Kiwanis Club interfaces with local elementary schools and Stephen Decatur High School with support to some of their programs, the biggest of which is annually awarding scholarships to SDHS senior students to further their education.

Kiwanis to Hold Fall Pancake Breakfast. Enjoy "Fine Food and Pleasant Company" at the Kiwanis Fall Pancake Breakfast on Saturday October 8th from 7 - 11 AM at the Ocean Pines Community Center. Includes: Pancakes, sausages, fruit cup, coffee & tea all for the same low price of $5 for adults, $3 for children under 12, and free for children under 5. Proceeds benefit the youth of the community, so enjoy good food while helping to support the community!

The “Unsung Heroes” Awards: A Novel Idea for Recognizing
Kiwanis Leadership

The end of a Kiwanis Administrative Year brings, and should bring, recognition of jobs well done as well as a welcome to new leadership. We offer our full support of the 2011-2012 Kiwanis Leadership Team. Division 17’s Lieutenant Governor Joyce Sharon had a novel idea and coordinated that well with her club presidents. She asked them to review their year and select a club member for the “Unsung Hero’s Award” to be given to a Kiwanian who demonstrated outstanding leadership and consistent service to their clubs...more
