Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City

by David Landis

Kiwanian Good Samaritan

Jerry Powell, Chairman for the Meals On Wheels Kiwanis Volunteers, was delivering meals, as he has done for the last 8 plus years as members of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City have done since the 1990's, when one of his delivery residents required some help. The club's volunteers deliver meals out of the Worcester County Senior Center in Berlin, MD. The following is the letter that was sent by a neighbor to the Worcester County Commission on Aging that handles the Worcester County Meals on Wheels Program:

"Dear Debbie:

Just wanted to thank you again for the wonderful people who work for "Meals On Wheels". My neighbor Olga Ryback was not feeling well recently and Jerry Powell insisted on sitting with her and calling someone to come check her before he left. Another day a woman called to make sure she (Olga) knew there was no delivery the following week and inquired how she was enduring the heat wave and if the her A.C. was working and if she knew who to call if it wasn't. How nice to know your workers care and and take time to be kind. All the delivery people are wonderful but only know the names Jerry and David. Keep up the good work.

Sincerely, Debbie Wiley"

Good Samaritans still exist!

Kiwanis Learns that Laughter Produces Good Health

People are always searching for ways to have better health and on August 18th the members of Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City learned how LAUGHTER can do just that.  Pictured is Carol Moore, a nurse and head of the Education Outreach Program of Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland, with the local Kiwanis Club President Dan Peletier, after she was the guest speaker at the meeting at Hall's Restaurant in Ocean City.  Her presentation was filled with lots of examples that had the audience laughing out loud while learning facts about the subject.

Kiwanis Sells BBQ to Raise Scholarship Funds

You can always count on the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City to busy raising funds for scholarships around Ocean Pines/Ocean City.  On August 7th they held their 7th Annual Carolina Pork BBQ in conjunction with the Craft Fair at Whitehorse Park in the Pines.  Pictured above is Kiwanis member, Phil Lassiter who has organized the event and been the main man at the roasting pit since the start.  The club also called out the "Dog Team" (right) to sell hot dogs which Kiwanians Mary Foelber and Charlie Warner are pictured grilling.

The next fundraiser is the Annual Duck Race held every year in September at Frontier Town on Rt. 611. Take the opportunity to buy chances now from any Kiwanis member for only $5 each or 3 for $10 or by contacting chairman, Ed Aurand, at 410-208-0479.  First Prize is $1500 CASH and the winner does not have to be present at the 5 PM race on September 11th.  2nd place wins $300, 3rd $150 and 4th $50, PLUS there are other non-cash prizes to be awarded.
