Strasburg Club: Six Months Old and Already Has 40 Members

by Steven Schetrom, President, Kiwanis Club of Strasburg

The Kiwanis Club of Strasburg was organized on April 21st, 2010 with 29 members. By our Charter Night, held during the early part of June at the Hotel Strasburg, we had grown to 40 members. Since that time, our emphasis on growth has moderated somewhat as we have given our attention to community service. Presently, we are at 42 members.

Currently, we are diligently focusing our attention on many projects in and around Strasburg. For example, during the month of July we were able to deliver a box of non-perishable food and over 1,000 rolls of toilet tissue to Compassion Cupboard, our local food pantry. Additionally, in early August we made our first monthly contribution of $32 to A Small Hand, a non-profit organization based in Edinburg, VA, that focuses on providing formula and diapers to children in Shenandoah County during their first weeks of life.

In addition to these ongoing projects, we have agreed to take on a couple of service projects in the community as well. One of these projects entails helping rebuild a playground for Response, Inc., a Shenandoah County organization dedicated to confronting cases of domestic abuse in the county. Another of these projects has to do with helping to renovate a shelter at our local town park.

Looking to more long-term goals, we have a vision to build a youth center in the town of Strasburg. This project may take some time, but many ideas are already being floated as to how we can accomplish this. Ultimately, we know that no matter what, our focus will remain on doing what we can to enrich the lives of the children of Strasburg and the surrounding community.
