Charlottesville Kiwanians Clean Books at Children's Library

by Jim Hart

Participating in one of their most favorite "Service Work Nights," twenty-five members of the Charlottesville Kiwanis Family cleaned and refurbished hundreds of well-used children books at the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library on Monday, August 29, 2011. "The Kiwanians always do such a tremendous job that we asked them to come back again at their earliest opportunity," said Krista Farrell, Assistant Director of JMRL and Central Branch Manager. Fifteen Kiwanis Club members were joined by eight members of the CKI Club at the University of Virginia alongside two leaders of the Key Club at Albemarle High School on this special "fifth Monday service work night." After accomplishing the tasks assigned to them by Karen Gillaspie, Children's Library Director, the group went upstairs to the Jefferson Room to enjoy a sumptuous meal prepared by the students in the culinary arts program at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center (CATEC). Service Work Night committee chair Charlie Krizek was commended for leading the K-Family volunteers in helping the library put good clean books in the hands of Charlottesville's eager young readers.

With the retirement of long-time Sec/Treas Ellis Stroup, effective October 1, 2011 Governor Tom Varner (right) will become the first new Secretary/Treasurer of the Capital District in over 36 years. At the 2011 DCON installation of officers ceremony, Kiwanis International Counselor Jane Erickson presented Tom with two pair of bulky athletic sox so that he might be better able to fill the big shoes left behind by outgoing Sec/Treas Ellis. "No one can fill Ellis’ shoes, but I will use all the skills and talents I have to be the best District Secretary/Treasurer that I can be," said Tom. ...more
