Poquoson Kiwanis Welcomes New Teachers

by Joe Discenza

In an annual tradition, the Kiwanis Club of Poquoson welcomed new teachers in the Poquoson School System at its regular morning breakfast on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 and introduced them to the many services the local club provides for children of Poquoson.

After the pledge of allegiance, patriotic song, blessing, and breakfast, Dr. Jennifer B. Parish, Poquoson School Superintendent, introduced the new teachers at the high, intermediate, and elementary schools.

As each was introduced, club president Philip E. Priscoe presented the teacher a $50 gift certificate as a donation toward the purchase of extra learning materials.

The Kiwanis club of Poquoson recently celebrated its 18th year of tutoring for Poquoson School System students. Kiwanis volunteers meet with their pupils once or twice a week to review material and assist students in reading and math exercises provided by their regular teachers.

At the Primary School, tutors provide guidance in reading while at the Middle School, math is the focus.
