Year round fun is a priority with the Kiwanis Club of Wilmington and we welcome everyone to join us.  On Tuesday, August 23rd, Kiwanis members Pat Bartoshesky, Charma Bell and Newark High School senior & Key Club member, Chelsea Caldwell, volunteered to read to the adorable children at the Wilmington, DE Salvation Army Child Care Center. Several books were read and stickers were distributed to all of the smiling children who look forward to the monthly reading group.

The Kiwanis Club of Mercury 64 was pleased to present Trena Shelton the first of four $1,000 scholarship checks at its July 20th meeting.  Trena is a graduate of Keoughtan High School in Hampton VA where she was Treasurer of the Key Club, an Honor Society member, a Girl's State delegate, active in sports and dedicated to academic excellence.  Trena will attend Old Dominion University this fall.

On July 22, dozens of young children from both Creekside and Sacramento Neighborhood Centers went to enjoy the Childrens Theater at Wolf Trap, where they saw performances by the Bob Brown puppets and the interactive Recess Monkey singers.  The children were able to go on stage and sing and dance with the Recess Monkeys.  The kids all enjoyed themselves, and ate lunch there as well.  Sofia, a 5-year-old, said: "I never was dancing like this in my life".  The Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club sponsored the transportation  by bus charter and entrance tickets.  The attached photos show the children with the performers.

At its regular breakfast meeting, the Kiwanis Club of Poquoson presented a check for $1,000.00 to the Poquoson Education Foundation.  Pictured left to right, Philip E. Priscoe, club president, J. Stephen Yakske Jr., club vice president, Dr. Jennifer B. Parish, Poquoson School superintendent, and Charles L. French, Poquoson Education Foundation board member and club member.

New Capital District Secretary/Treasurer no Stranger to the Job

With the retirement of long-time Sec/Treas Ellis Stroup, effective October 1, 2011 Governor Tom Varner (right) will become the first new Secretary/Treasurer of the Capital District in over 36 years. At the 2011 DCON installation of officers ceremony, Kiwanis International Counselor Jane Erickson presented Tom with two pair of bulky athletic sox so that he might be better able to fill the big shoes left behind by outgoing Sec/Treas Ellis. "No one can fill Ellis’ shoes, but I will use all the skills and talents I have to be the best District Secretary/Treasurer that I can be," said Tom. ...more
