Tysons Corner Kiwanis Allocates $1,000 for Key Leader Sponsorships

by Anh Nguyen, Public Relations Committee Chair

As a proud believer of its Service Leadership Programs, the Kiwanis Club of Tysons Corner/McLean, Va., has decided to allocated $1,000 to sponsor high school students in the northern Virginia area to attend Key Leader on April 23-25, 2010 in Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center in Millersville, Md.

For non-Key Club members, the club will cover 100 percent of their registration costs (value $200) and for Key Club members, the club will cover $125 of their registration costs. The purpose of this sponsorship plan is to encourage students outside of the Kiwanis Family to attend Key Leader as well as to ensure that current Key Club members have some vested interest in attending so they do make the most out of their weekend.

Key Leader is a leadership education weekend for high school students focusing on the concept of service leadership and five principles: integrity, growth, respect, community and excellence. For more information, please visit www.key-leader.org or visit www.youtube.com/capitalkeyleader.

"We are really happy to be in this position to be able to give many more local students this year the opportunity to better their leadership skills," comments Stacy Bruss, 2009-10 Club President, "Every Key Leader alumni we've sponsored in the past has always stated that going through this program is a life-changing event and has been grateful for our financial contribution. We are also proud that three members of our club are on the Key Leader District Committee -- Corey Goggin, Corey Jerome and Nicole McDermott."

Any high school student who would like to apply for a Key Leader scholarship from Tysons Corner Kiwanis should e-mail the club treasurer, Kristina Dlugozima (treasurer@tysonscornerkiwanis.org) for details. For more information about the Capital District Key Leader in April or to learn more about the Key Leader District Committee, please contact District Chair Nicole McDermott (capitalkeyleader@gmail.com).
