The Kiwanis Club of Frederick's main program schedules for the month of May are "Kiwanis Community Youth Needs" with the first panel on May 4th. Speaking to the club were left, Patrick Gunnin, Executive Director, Boys and Girls Club of Frederick County, who spoke to the group on the Club which was established 110 years ago, and how it supports young people and the programs and support offered to young children. Ray Taylor, far right, retired federal employee and local businessman, spoke to the group about his association with young children through his many areas and years of coaching. He also remembered the time when as a youngster he was injured in one eye and was at the stage where he was going to lose his sight when a local Kiwanis Club came forward and provided the funds for the surgery needed to save his sight. Frederick Kiwanian Mike Hosford, program coordinator for May, is in the center.

The Kiwanis Club of Frederick continued their "Kiwanis Community Youth Needs" program on May 11 with Frederick Chief of Police Col. Kim Dine and Scott Alexander, President/CEO, Frederick Youth Alliance speaking to the club. Chief Dine spoke about crime statistics and trends of violence and robbery in the city and the Departments outreach and prevention youth programs. Alexander spoke on the goals of the Alliance and especially the Club Explorer program in providing an after-school and summer enrichment program where youth can explore their strengths and build skills needed to make good choices. The Alliance also works with the local police through the Police Activities League in building better relationships between families and children and law enforcement. Zack Hosford, right, Research Associate with the Center of New American Security, was a recent speaker to the Kiwanis Club of Frederick. Hosford spoke and showed slides of his recent trip to Kurdistan where he met with local officials, visited historical sites, and also met with people in the general population. He spoke about the country, their struggles, relationship with other parts of Iraq and what the future looks like for the Kurds. In addition to visiting Kurdistan, he has also traveled extensively in the Middle East, Korea, and China on various fact finding and research missions.
