Rehoboth Beach Key Clubs Installed at Joint Ceremony

by Rosemary Cummings

Rehoboth Beach Kiwanis Club celebrated the Installation of Officers for their three Key Clubs in a unique way. Officers from Cape Henlopen HS, Indian River HS, and JM Bennett HS had a joint installation. The weather was a little ominous that Sunday, but everyone was there. The current Officers, Key Club Members, Kiwanians, Parents, Faculty Advisors, and K-Kids gathered for the festivities. The youngest attendee was two month old Dawson McCabe, son of Kiwanians Brian and Lisa. Just in case, the first order of business was a picnic lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, salads, brownies, and all the other goodies. Everyone sat near the food under a covered area, a great way to meet everyone from the three Clubs and introduce each other. Then the sun started to appear, so they wandered into the garden. Ah, the perfect place for the Installation. They set up the flag and everyone gathered around. After the Pledge of Allegiance, the Key Club and K-Kids Pledges, Kiwanis Lt. Gov. Rosemary Cummings and Kiwanis Advisor installed the Officers. Normally, the Key Club Lt. Gov would have this honor but the new Division 11A Lt. Gov and member of JM Bennett Key Club, Paige Curtis, was in Williamsburg for the first Key Club Board Meeting.

First, the Editors came forward, and then the Secretaries, the Treasurers, the VPs, and finally the three Presidents, Cape's Tanya Munikwa, Bennett's Teddy Dunning, and Indian River's Jenn Clark received their pins attesting they would lead their Club in 2010-2011. Next, the graduating seniors from Bennett and Cape came forward to receive their Key Club Medallions to wear on graduation day. K-Kids moving up to Builders Club also were recognized. K-Kid Gerri Flowers received an Honorable Mention Certificate for her entry in the K-Kids Art contest. After pictures, the fun began, as they all raced to the Bethany Dunes Beach for volleyball, soccer, Jai Lai, headstands, and sand castles. The highlight was when the Key Club members dug a huge sand pit - then they buried Teddy Dunning standing up. It was great fun. There was no need for the typical icebreakers at this meeting, as the Key Clubbers spent the next three hours at the beach. A few even braved the cold Atlantic for a quick dip. Then they prepared to return home, but not before returning to the food, where they finished the pizza, chips, soda, and cut into the Chocolate mousse cake. They all agreed their next training and planning session would be at the beach.
