Scott Roman Chosen Reisterstown Club's Teenager of the Year

by Steve Jenkins

Scott Roman (below) has been selected as the 2010 Teenager of the Year by the Kiwanis Club of Reisterstown, MD.

Scott, a 10th grader at Franklin High School, was selected from a field of nominees from the area's high schools. Nominees were evaluated on their academic achievements, volunteer service, citizenship and leadership performance.

The award was presented to Mr. Roman by James Lichty, President of the Kiwanis Club. In making the presentation, Mr. Lichty, said, "We are proud to recognize Scott Roman as Teenager of the Year for his achievements, responsibility and leadership role in his school and the community. He exemplifies today's young people striving for excellence in their own lives, as well as contributing to the betterment of their communities."

Scott is the son of Ramon and Barbara Roman of Reisterstown. He has 2 sisters; Samantha Roman, 19 and Marissa Roman, 18. Scott feels his oldest sister Samantha is the most influential person in his life. Because she has been able to balance academics, sports and clubs in a successful manor, he wishes to follow her example. She plays a key role driving to his goals.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and on the Principal's List, Athletic Distinguished Scholar and on the Honor Roll. Scott participates in many extra-curricular activities including being on the 2008-09 Varsity Golf Team and JV track and field teams, the Key Club where he held the position of Vice President, active member of the Class of 2012 Steering committee and the Model UN club, as well as on "It's Academic.". He also volunteers his time at the Irvine Nature Center, UNICEF and helps with Kiwanis Club service acts, such as baking cookies for the troops overseas. He even finds time for a part-time employment. He enjoys playing basketball, practicing Karate and working with his church youth group in his spare time. He is truly a well rounded young man.

After high school, Scott aspires to attend Harvard or MIT.

As the winner on the club level, Scott's nomination will be submitted to the division and district competition with other teenagers through Virginia, Delaware, Maryland and DC.

The Kiwanis organization's major emphasis is "serving the world's children," and a major focus is youth services. Kiwanis clubs throughout the world sponsor Circle K clubs in colleges, Key Clubs in local high schools, Builders Clubs in middle school and K Kids in elementary schools, as well as mentoring teens and other projects benefiting children.

The Kiwanis Club of Reisterstown currently sponsors three Key Clubs, Franklin, Owings Mills, and Hereford High Schools.

The Club also contributes to the Kiwanis International goal to raise $75 million to eradicate iodine deficiency disorder (IDD) throughout the world. IDD is the result of a lack of iodine in the diet and causes mental retardation, goiter and other impairments. In partnership with UNICEF, Kiwanis International is helping to build salt plants, educating families on proper diet and working with third world governments to regulate salt manufacturing to include iodine.
