Time For Aktion

by Past Gov Art Riley

The action opportunity for Kiwanis Clubs is the growing possibilities for the formation of Aktion Clubs in the Capital District. Aktion Clubs are a fast growing component of the Kiwanis family that provide the sponsoring clubs with new service options, unique community exposure, additional ways to work with Kiwanis SLP and the opportunity to improve the lives of an important segment of the community. Now is the time for Kiwanis Clubs to investigate venues in the community were Aktion Clubs are possible.

Initially, Aktion Clubs were organized in conjunction with community based agencies that serve citizens with developmental challenges. Now, through the work of many Kiwanis Clubs, some in the Capital District, Aktion clubs are being formed in assisted living facilities, rehabilitation units, military rehabilitation hospitals, nursing homes as well as with the original models.
The common result is that Aktion Clubs enable persons with physical or learning challenges the opportunity to contribute to their community to the extent of their abilities. Additionally, Kiwanis Clubs that sponsor Aktion Clubs have learned that the results also include more opportunities to work with CKI and Key Clubs, greater exposure through joint projects with Aktion Club members and increased interest in Kiwanis membership.

Aktion clubs are easy to start and require minimal financial support but Aktion Clubs do require Kiwanian involvement and commitment. The rewards, however, are significant and life changing. The time for action is now. For more information or a presentation on building an Aktion Club, contact Arthur Riley, RxArthur@aol.com
