Busy Times For Kiwanis Club of OP/OC

by David Landis

(Above) Fall is always one of the busiest times for the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City. This year it began with the club cooking and distributing refreshments at the Dedication of the new Ocean Pines Community Center and North Fire Station on September 12th at noon, see Kiwanian Charlie Warner manning the grill as club President Corky Widerman helps. Also Pat Winkelmayer sold last minute race tickets at the dedication for the 2009 Annual Kiwanis Duck Race Fundraiser which went off at 5 PM the same day. Both events were very successful and well attended.

(Above) On October 3rd the club again manned the hotdog grill and donated the refreshments for the 5th Annual Walk to Defeat ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Kiwanian and our Maryland States Attorney for Worcester County, Joel Todd, pictured, lead the walk playing the bagpipes. Many Kiwanians also pledged and marched in the ALS Walk.

(Above) Pictured are some of the "Dog Team" members who also worked all summer long selling hot dogs at the weekly Ocean Pines Concerts in the Park as they man the stand for the ALS Walk (L to R) Bob Pfeifer, Jerry Powell, President Corky Widerman, Mark Page, Pat Winkelmayer and Ralph Chinn.

(Above) The ALS Walk was President Widerman's last official event as the Installation of Officers for the 2009-2010 service year for the club took place on October 7th when new President Dan Pelitier was installed. Pictured are (L to R) Barbara Peletier, Dan Peletier, Past Lt. Governor Dick Feeser and current Lt. Governor Barbara Hickman at the installation ceremony.

The following weekend, October 10th, the club held it's Annual Fall Pancake Breakfast, one of the many fundraisers for the club's Scholarship Foundation, which was well supported by the community as seen in the picture of the patrons enjoying the breakfast at which local Key Club members from Stephen Decatur High School (Kiwanis at the High School level) worked as they do at all the pancake breakfasts.

And finally, The Annual German Dinner is coming up on Sunday November 1st. It will be held at the Ocean Pines Country Club with two seatings at 4 PM and 6 PM. Reservations are requested as the event is historically very well attended. The cost is $18 for adults and Children under 12 are $5. Call Ralph Chinn at 410-208-6719 for reservations. There will be a buffet featuring foods freshly and lovingly prepared by Kiwanis members: Sauerbraten, Home-made Potato Dumplings, Green Beans, Red Cabbage, Sauerkraut and Bratwurst, Applesauce, Pumpernickel and Rye Bread, Coffee and Tea, German Chocolate Cake or Fruit Cocktail and a Cash Bar. Carry-out is available from 4 PM until 7 PM.
