Food Drive

by Rosemary Cummings

The day was perfect. K-Kids and Kiwanians greeted food shoppers at the local Super Fresh, as they entered (to give them a Kiwanis flyer and ask for a food donation) and as they exited (to look each person in the eye and say, "Thank you for your gift"). In just four hours on a crisp Fall October Saturday morning, the Lewes neighbors filled the Kiwanis grocery van with bags of groceries. The shoppers responded well to the K-Kids, who love meeting people and taking the filled carts to the van for the Kiwanians who then deliver the food to the local pantry. Some shoppers who forgot to pick up an item or two gave a monetary donation, and Kiwanis sent a check to the pantry to buy toiletries and washing products and other necessary items. The next food drive is in November at grocery stores South of the Indian River Bridge. Volunteers give an hour or two but before they know it the time goes by very quickly meeting neighbors and explaining first-hand how Kiwanis serves in the community.
