LaPlata Cub Hosts Charter Night for K-Kids Club

by Judi Gorney

The Kiwanis Club of LaPlata hosted a Charter Night for our newest K-Kids Club at T.C. Martin Elementary School on March 8, 2010, in Bryantown, MD. Governor Don Dudey was on hand to help with the ceremony. Jonnie Mann, Kiwanis Advisor, swore in the 22 new members as we all looked on taking pictures. The Kiwanis Club of LaPlata provided a great dinner of pizza with ice cream and cake for dessert. The LaPlata High School Key Club took on the task of serving all in attendance.

The new Club has already had a very busy year. They decorated Christmas trees which raised $600 for Hospice of Charles County, made greeting cards for the residents of one of our local nursing homes, had a coat drive for the homeless and made feeders for hungry birds. In addition to all of those projects, they participated in a school project collecting books for needy children as well as helping to raise money for the victims of Haiti's earthquakes.

The newest and youngest Kiwanians all showed excitement about becoming Kiwanians. Some were already asking about joining a Builders Club when they enter middle school in the fall!
