Rehoboth Beach Kiwanis One Family Service Day

by Rosemary Cummings

Rehoboth Beach Kiwanis Club celebrated KiwanisOne day a little early so they could participate in the annual Beach Grass planting service efforts of Delaware Natural Resources (DNREC). Kiwanians, Key Club members from 3 Clubs and K-Kids from 3 Clubs and their family members joined in efforts to replant the beach grass the when recent storms ravaged the dunes. The work this year was particularly important to the area. The ocean almost seemed to approach the road and the bay when viewed from the bridge. Travelers along Route 1 were often diverted when the sands covered the road. The Seashore Dunes were first "pushed into place" after the December and February storms sliced them. Then the volunteers had their day in the sun planting both sides of the new dunes with beach grass. After their hard work, the local mobile anglers treated the workers to lunch from their canteen. Everyone finished their work smiling and agreed it was a fun outing. Several Key Club members happily went for a dip in the frigid ocean. The pictures and the people tell the story.

While the first Kiwanis group was busy on the beach, another group of Kiwanians, Key Club and K-Kids members worked outside the Rehoboth Super Fresh and Super Giant to collect groceries for the Cape Henlopen Food Basket. The members handed fliers, which explain the Food Basket needs, and on the reverse side, there is information about the community service Rehoboth Beach Kiwanis provides. The group worked in shifts from 8 AM until Noon and then packed the donations for delivery to the food pantry. Local shoppers who did not purchase groceries donated $37 to the cause. A very busy day for Kiwanis, but all agreed it was fun and they would do it again.
