SHOWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WELCOMES KIWANIS JUDGES

Every Spring members of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines - Ocean City judge the art, essay, and poem entries of the students in grades Pre-K through third grade at Showell for their "Maryland Project".  The program was started in 1992 by now retired Showell Elementary Principal, Paula Jones.  It's a way for the students to learn about their state and county as well as things located therein, like Assateague, Ocean City, or even historical or other current important figures and events of the area.

Pictured above is Vice Principal and Curriculum Resources teacher, Sandra West, instructing the Kiwanians about how to judge the projects.  Also pictured is Kiwanis member Skip Denning as he judges an art project about the historic Atlantic Hotel in Berlin, Maryland.  The students submitted well over 200 entries, all of which were great.

Spring comes every year which means that the Kiwanis Club of  Greater Ocean Pines-Ocean City holds its annual Italian Dinner Scholarship Fundraiser.  Lots of work is done by members who help in the kitchen to prepare the food at DeNovo's Trattoria in Ocean Pines.  Pictured are (L to R) Steve Rosen, Bob Beck, owner of DeNovo's who donated his time and outstanding food, and Dave Landis getting prepared in the kitchen for the first seating.   Also pictured are (L to R) CaliAnne Tilley, Simmi Chawla, and Bethany Sauter, three members of the Stephen Decatur Key Club, who are Kiwanians at the high school level, and volunteered their services to help make the dinner a success.  It was a full house at all three of the seatings for which the club thanks the guests for their continued support of Kiwanis events enablinging the club to annually award scholarships to local deserving high school senior students.

STATES ATTORNEY, JOEL TODD, ADDRESSES KIWANIS

Worcester County States Attorney, Joel Todd, who is also an active member of the Kiwanis Club of greater Ocean Pines -  Ocean City was the guest speaker at the club's weekly meeting on Wednesday April 21 at the Ocean Pines Community Center.  He talked about the mission of his office and staff to "enforce the rights of the public, protect the innocent, and prosecute the guilty".  Pictured is Joel Todd as he spoke to the group while Kiwanis President, Dan Peletier, is seated to his right listening intently.

Mr. Todd has been the States Attorney for Worcester County since January 2, 1995.  Prior to that, he was the Assistant States since July 1, 1985, giving him a long service record to Worcester County.  Most of all he addressed a successful program that dealt with getting drug dealers of the streets in Berlin, Maryland.  A program that was first used in High Point, NC and copied in numerous other jurisdictions, of which Berlin, MD is one.  Today Berlin is a better place to live than it was before the program was instituted in 2009 thanks to this program and the continuing efforts of the Mayor and Police Department of Berlin in cooperation with the States Attorney's Office.  The Berlin results have been nationally recognized .
